An excellent example of stealing from the future, drawing down irreplaceable natural resources. New York Times: America Is Using Up Its Groundwater Like There’s No Tomorrow
Overuse is draining and damaging aquifers nationwide, a New York Times data investigation revealed.
An excellent example of #overshoot (no paywall, gifted article). This article documents the phenomenon in the USA, but we should probably assume it's happening everywhere.
Here is an interview with Professor William R. Catton, Jr. in his home discussing the concept of #Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change. I'm so grateful for Professor Catton's book. It taught me so, so much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF6F0bgvARc&t=242s
I just learned of the passing of Rev. Michael Dowd, at the unfortunately young age of 65. I am deeply grateful for all that I learned from him and his work. Michael Dowd taught me about Overshoot, both the book by Dr. William R. Catton, Jr. and the concept. He taught me about the inevitable contraction of human civilizations because they aren't sustainable, and he suggested ways of being through that contraction and collapse.
Just this month, our #ClimateSolutionsBookClub read Dr. Catton's Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change, which I had read and nominated for us to discuss based on Michael's book talk of the title. It's the most important book I have ever read about the survival of the human species. I have posted Michael Dowd's videos entitled Overshoot and Collapse where he recommends that specific book in the comments. Like me, you may find his recommendations compelling.
Michael Dowd was deeply involved in the Deep Adaptation movement: the people who accept the reality of our predicament living in the human-caused ecological degradation of our biosphere and who learn from each other how to exist calmly and with joy despite that reality.
This is his last sermon, shared at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Flint, Michigan. It's so poignant in that he discusses 'what if" you were in the last six months of your life, how would you be? It turns out he was in his last six months of life.
He was blessed to be 'the eye in the storm' for so many. There is much wisdom here about becoming an 'eye in the storm' for others as they experience their storms. He has also created over ninety videos of his conversations with people about the challenge of Deep Adaptation.
May his memory be a blessing to his widow and his family. Thank you to Professor Jem Bendell of the #DeepAdaptation movement for sharing the information of Michael Dowd's death and his last public talk. This 30-minute talk is full of so much wisdom.

Really good article explaining this phenomena. Glad to see it in the mainstream and a US-wide look! Been tracking locally for years.
Looking forward to discussing this book tonight. In despair as our Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is REVERSING many flagship climate policies in a desperate attempt to save his electoral skin. It won't work. But on the same day our wonderful Chris Packham aired this documentary on channel 4 https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/sep/20/chris-packham-is-it-time-to-break-the-law-review-the-bravest-most-anguished-tv-of-the-year
